A family tragedy inspired Speed’s Trish Torpey to become a water safety instructor, and now, after 30 years of teaching babies and children across the Mallee Track the most important of water safety skills, she is ready to hang up her togs and float into retirement.

What started as a four-week trial art class has now become a permanent fixture on the Murrayville calendar due to its popularity and “relaxing” atmosphere. The watercolour painting lessons, taught by Brenda Menzel and offered by Murrayville Neighbourhood House, were a “huge success” over their initial four week period, and have now been made an ongoing class.

The budding childhood education career of a young Mallee woman is getting a boost thanks to the Foundation of the Mallee Track. Annie Brown has been awarded a scholarship from the Mallee Track Health and Community Service’s Foundation of Mallee Track.

A volunteer service that helps connect Sea Lake residents with the broader region to support their health needs is back up and running. Mallee Track Health and Community Service oversees the Community Transport service.

Community members in the Ouyen district are being offered the chance to develop and strengthen their First Aid skills, thanks to a new partnership between Mallee Track Health and Community Service (MTHCS) and local training provider Mallee First Aid.

FRESH new upgrades to the Mallee Track Health and Community Service (MTHCS) Ouyen campus are in the final stages of completion. The work included replacing carpet in the main hallways, safely removing asbestos, removal of old tiles, prepping the space and installing new carpet and fresh paint.

There was a focus on youth development and team building as young people from Ouyen held the region’s annual debutant ball. The tradition, dating back to the 1950s and overseen since 2005 by the Mallee Track Health and Community Service, brings the community together to welcome the debutants with a night of food, music and dancing.

Mallee Track Health and Community Services says its home care support will increase as changes take place in the sector. MTHCS services of delivered meals, social support groups, transport, nursing and allied health are staying the same in the Buloke Shire Council area.
