A Rural Generalist Graduate Program for Registered and Enrolled Nurses


Welcome to the Mallee Track Health and Community Service Graduate Program for Registered and Enrolled Nurses.

The Mallee Track Health and Community Service Graduate Registered and Enrolled Nurse Program is a structured and comprehensive program designed to equip recent nursing graduates with the knowledge, skills, and support needed to excel in their careers.

Program Highlights

Our Graduate Nurse Program provides an extensive orientation and a supportive learning environment to ensure a smooth transition into professional practice. Each graduate is paired with an experienced nurse preceptor and nurse educator, who offer guidance, mentorship, and ongoing support throughout the program. Participants also have access to a range of advanced skill development opportunities, including Urgent Care Workshops (IV cannulation, fracture management, immobilization, x-ray, and emergency birth), Advanced Life Support training, the Rural Urgent Care Nursing Program through Alfred Emergency Education, and the Rural and Isolated (Scheduled Medicines) Registered Nurse Course via the Cunningham Centre— equipping graduates with the expertise needed for rural nursing.

Study Days

In collaboration with Mildura Base Public hospital and Swan Hill District Health you will attend six additional paid study days to promote and encourage professional development which may include:

  • Leadership and Career Development
  • Patient Assessment
  • Paediatric
  • Cardiac
  • Clinical Development

To be eligible, you must have graduated from an undergraduate nursing degree or a diploma of nursing within the last two years and have a genuine interest in learning how to provide care in rural settings.

Program Structure

The program consists of four clinical rotations:

  • Rotation 1 (three months) - focuses on aged care, primary care, and district nursing.
  • Rotation 2 (three months) - focuses on acute care and urgent care.
  • Rotation 3 - this rotation provides the opportunity to undertake a rotation in the Emergency Department at Mildura Base Public Hospital and Swan Hill District Health, with the potential for additional experience at a Victorian regional hospital subject to availability.
  • Rotation 4 (three months) - allows graduates to consolidate their knowledge and skills across the various nursing services offered by Mallee Track.

Throughout the program, graduates benefit from hands on clinical practice, dedicated mentorship, and ongoing professional education, ensuring a strong foundation for a successful nursing career in rural healthcare.

Ongoing Employment

For Registered Nurses

At the completion of 12 month graduate program, you will have the skills and confidence to lead the clinical team to deliver care to rural communities. We encourage Mallee Track Health and Community Care nurses to progress their knowledge and skills and obtain recognition for advanced practice. We encourage and support staff to pursue post graduate qualifications including Graduate Certificate, Diploma and Masters including Nurse Practitioner.

For Enrolled Nurses

Our commitment to excellence means that we will support you to achieve your goals in nursing.

If you are interested in obtaining acknowledgement as an advanced enrolled nurse, we can support you to become an expert in one of the following areas:

  • Wound Care
  • Palliative Care
  • Continence
  • Dementia Care
  • Chronic Disease Management

If you are interested in leading the healthcare team, we can support you to undertake study to become a Registered Nurse.
